EDGE is reaching into its archive and sharing some of our favorite stories from the past.

Orlando Bloom often posts shirtless selfies, and, as his recent feature on Men's Health shows, the buff 45-year-old has plenty of reason to do so. Most recently, he posted a video of his upper-body training on Instagram.

"Orlando donned a pair of black shorts for the sweaty workout, flaunting his washboard abs and muscular legs," writes the Daily Mail. "Sporting a goatee beard, the 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' actor – who is engaged to pop star Katy Perry – tied his curly locks back from his face."

"In the first video, Bloom can be seen performing a set of barbell bicep curls using an EZ bar, with his jacked biceps and defined chest on full display. The second clip shows him training his core with an ab wheel, and the third and final video shows Bloom performing a rear cable fly, which targets the delts."

That he is even working out at all is something. "I broke my back when I was 19 and they said I'd never walk again," Bloom wrote in the caption. Amongst his other injuries over the years have been a broken arm and leg while playing rugby and skiing respectively, and fractured several ribs while performing stunts as Legolas in "The Lord of the Rings."

He explained to GQ in 2005 about how he broke his back. "Late one night, messing around, he leapt onto a drainpipe while trying to get onto a roof terrace; the pipe gave way, and Bloom fell three stories, shattering his vertebrae."

He told the magazine: "Until then, I didn't have a healthy appreciation for life and death – that we're not invincible," he says. "And for four days, I faced the idea of living in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I went to some dark places in my mind. I realized, I'm either going to walk again or I'm not.

"The doctor said he wasn't sure how severe the spinal cord damage was," Bloom recounted. "I remember him telling me that, and staring at the ceiling, thinking, I never stared at ceilings before! And I wonder if I'm going to be looking at ceilings for the rest of my life."

Adding: "But there's something interesting, I knew I wouldn't. I knew I wouldn't, I knew..."

"He repeats the sentence five times," GQ reported, "quick like a stammer, as though he's still trying to convince himself against hope that this will not be his fate."

Men's Health points out the reason for his latest fitness regimen is his upcoming role in "crime action drama 'Red Right Hand,' in which he plays a former gangster who tries to start a new life but ends up crossing paths with a dangerous crime boss. Last month, he shared several behind-the-scenes photos from the set of that movie, including some fake chest and neck tattoos he has been sporting while playing the role."
