As if being cast as a main character on "Schitt's Creek" wasn't life-defining enough, Emily Hampshire – who played Stevie, a friend of Dan Levy's character David, on the Emmy-sweeping sitcom – revealed that it was a famous scene from the show that helped her figure out she was pansexual, NBC News reports.

Hampshire recalled the scene, which appeared in the show's first season, during an appearance on the podcast 4D with Demi Lovato.

Lovato also identifies as pansexual, as well as non-binary.

The scene, from the show's tenth episode, "Honeymoon," has David and Stevie shopping for wine after having had a sexual encounter, with Stevie broaching the topic of sexual orientation by referring to herself as someone who "only (drinks) red wine" and seeking clarification on David's sexuality.

"And up until last night," Stevie adds, "I was under the impression that you, too, only drank red wine. But I guess I was wrong?"

David then offers a comprehensive explanation of pansexuality, effortlessly extending Stevie's wine metaphor: "I do drink red wine," he tells her. "But I also drink white wine. And I've been known to sample the occasional rosé. And a couple of summers back, I tried a merlot that used to be a chardonnay – which got a bit complicated."

"Oh. So you're just open to all wines," Stevie says.

"I like the wine and not the label," David summarizes. "Does that make sense?"

Hampshire told Lovato that it did, indeed, make sense, and eventually helped her make sense of herself.

"I had never heard the word 'pansexual' before," Hampshire disclosed, before adding: "I've always considered myself super knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ stuff, just because everybody in my life, my friends are all mostly LGBTQ+ people. But I didn't know this."

"In 2018, five years after filming that scene, Hampshire began dating singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger, who had come out as transgender the previous year," NBC News recounted.

Hampshire turned to her old scene partner for help in clarifying things. "I said to Dan, 'This is so weird. What am I?' Because I truly just fell in love with a person, and where they were on the gender spectrum did not matter to me."

Levy's response?

"He was like, 'You're pansexual. Don't you watch our show?' " Hampshire recalled.

"In fact, on May 24, 2019, Hampshire shared the scene with her fans and followers on Instagram to celebrate Pansexual Visibility Day," NBC News detailed.

"And since then, it really doesn't matter to me," Hampshire went on to add. "I have to like the person. I'm really attracted to a person's vibe."
