The pastor of an African-American church in Prince George's County will be state Del. Heather Mizeur's running mate in her bid for Maryland governor.

Mizeur's campaign announced Wednesday that the Rev. Delman Coates will run for lieutenant governor on her ticket.

Coates is the pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton. In a break with some other black church leaders from Prince George's County, he was an advocate for legalization of gay marriage in Maryland.

Mizeur says she worked closely with Coates to enact the gay marriage law and help it survive a referendum. She calls him "a thoughtful, charismatic change agent for the people."

Mizeur is a Montgomery County Democrat. She's running against Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler for the party's nomination for governor.
