Eye Candy :: Mike Munich on Gaga, Glee & Adam Lambert
Kevin Mark Kline READ TIME: 6 MIN.
Fans of GLEE or Lady Gaga will know the name Mike Munich, and those who haven't heard of him yet are likely to learn all about the 24-year old dancer singer as his career blossoms.
WeHo News' Joshua Miller caught up with Mike to ask him about his recent experiences in show business.
Joshua Miller: How old were you when you started the art of dance?
Mike Munich: I was 7 years old. The year before my parents had moved from one suburb of Minneapolis to the next one over, and my mother had seen a sign on the side of the road advertising adult jazz and tap classes at a nearby studio. After hanging around the studio, I fell in love and began asking if I could start taking classes myself. The next year, I was enrolled in an all boys' jazz class and it snowballed from there.
Inspiration?
Joshua Miller: Was there one person/ artist that inspired you to do dance professionally?
Mike Munich: I grew up on the MTV days of Britney Spears. I was 12 years old when "... baby one more time" came out and I instantly knew that that was I wanted to do for a living. I remember watching the making the video ... it was my favorite show! I made sure to never ever miss an episode with Britney.
Joshua Miller: What is your favorite dance move?
Mike Munich: I really love a sensible ball change, there's just so much you can do with it. And a good runway walk. You can never go wrong whilst tipping. You can also never go wrong with a head roll or a hair flip.
Joshua Miller: What would you consider your first Big Break?
Mike Munich: I don't know if I had a big break exactly.... however, there is one job that created transition in my career. I was direct booked by Dan Karaty on season 3 of America's got talent in 2008. The producers hire professional dancers to add a higher production value to the acts competing on the show.
Return of Vocal Adrenaline
Joshua Miller: You have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry like Adam Lambert, Beyonc, Toni Braxton and Lady Gaga. Who would you like to work with next?
Mike Munich: Kylie!!! She is my everything. I would also love to work with Madonna. I mean, who wouldn't!
Joshua Miller: Lets talk Glee... Are we going to see Vocal Adrenaline again on the small screen?
Mike Munich: You'll have to stay tuned to find out.
Joshua Miller: How did it feel throwing eggs at Lea Michelle?
Mike Munich: It was all in good fun.... poor thing was such a good sport! Some of the eggs weren't breaking, so finding the right strength and speed to throw them was a little challenging. I had gotten mugged 2 days before and I got a little carried away channeling my anger and aggression into the scene!
Joshua Miller: Which character did you bond with the most on the show/ tour?
Mike Munich: Naya Rivera, who plays Santana on the show. She constantly has me rolling around on the floor laughing my face off. She's also got a whole bunch of gay man trapped inside her somewhere ... most likely in her hair. We still talk pretty regularly.
On Adam Lambert & bottoming for Gaga
Joshua Miller:Lets talk Adam Lambert... The debut performance of "For Your Entertainment" was Adams most notorious performance yet, what was it like working with Adam Lambert on his biggest performance?
Mike Munich: Amazing! He is so sweet and friendly and loves to have a good time. He took such good care of us.
Joshua Miller: Was "the kiss" planned?
Mike Munich: Nope! I think Adam was just really living in the moment and that's what he was feeling at the time.
Joshua Miller: Did you guys expect the crazy reaction of the public after the kiss?
Mike Munich: We knew that the performance was going to piss people off ... it was meant to be controversial. However, I don't think anyone anticipated the backlash to be so severe.
Joshua Miller: What was it like simulating sex with Lady Gaga?
Mike Munich: Spontaneous! You never know what is coming next.... she is so invested in "the movie" that you have to roll with the punches. I knew she would be getting on top of me, but I didn't know that she was going to turn me over and make me her bitch! I still love saying that I bottomed for gaga.
On the red carpet with Gaga
Joshua Miller: What was it like walking down the Red Carpet with Lady Gaga resting on your shoulders?
Mike Munich: Surreal.... I still kind of feel like it never happened. We were meant to be robotic and droid like which made it difficult to take in the experience. There were photographers getting too close and people with their backs to us. I had no control over the speed at which we were moving and I was clipping unexpecting bystanders as we passed (and unable to give them any warning!).
Joshua Miller: How heavy was it?
Mike Munich: It was more that it was a cumbersome shape and uncomfortable to carry up on our shoulders. The boys in the front and back had the bulk of the weight.... i was on the side more for show. But as my shoulders were cramping up I had an inner dialogue playing that said, "don't show your pain, don't show your pain, don't show your pain! It will be worth it."
Joshua Miller: What's with the face prosthetics?
Mike Munich: They transformed us into Gaga's new race.... free of prejudice and hate.
Joshua Miller: What is it like working with one of the industries top choreographers like Laurie-Ann Gibson?
Mike Munich: Laurieann is such a pleasure and a delight to work for. She has such an amazing vision and such a unique sense of musicality ... I would love to know what goes on inside her head! One of the things I love most about working with her is that she is always encouraging us to be "star dancers". As dancers, we work so hard and sweat for a living and are most often under appreciated. Essentially.... we are background. Laurieann wants us to be superstars and dance like it is all about us. It's such a breath of fresh air.
Joshua Miller: Is Laurie-Ann "hands on" with the dancers?
Mike Munich: Yes ... especially as she workshops the choreography.
Joshua Miller: What is next for Mike Munich? What is your Ultimate Goal?
Mike Munich: I'm in the beginning stages of producing a "Boylesque" show.... I want it to be a gender fuck of hyper masculinity and femininity wrapped into one. Boys in shoulder pads and football pants wearing fishnets and 4-inch pumps. In the end I would love to be an artistic director ... and I'm also toying with the idea of beginning a pop career myself.
