Wisconsin gay rights group seeks to defend domestic partner law

MADISON, Wis. -- A gay rights group will ask the Wisconsin Supreme Court to reject a lawsuit that seeks to invalidate the state's new domestic partnership law.
Fair Wisconsin will seek to intervene Tuesday in a lawsuit that asks the court to strike down the law giving same-sex couples some spousal benefits.
The Department of Health Services says 970 couples have been added to the registry since the law went into effect in August.
Registering gives them limited legal protections such as the right to visit each other in the hospital and take medical leave to care for an ill partner.
Fair Wisconsin executive director Katie Belanger says the group is intervening "so that we can protect the interests of our members."
