Wicked Sweet Whisky: Macallan's New Scotch Liqueur
Megan Bedford READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Can scotch whisky connosseirs and lovers of liqueurs unite? Longtime experts at The Macallan seem to think so, with the bold launch of their very first single malt scotch liqueur, Amber. For now this fall treat is only available in Boston, and recently celebrated its launch at the city?s Four Seasons hotel.
At 25% alcohol content, The Macallan?s Amber is infused with a blend of natural maple and pecan, resulting in a scotch that is surprisingly smooth and sweet. With a rich amber color, the scotch liqueur has a nutty, honey aroma. The hint of mocha is balanced in taste by a light, peppery spice, making Amber perfectly suited to a New England fall.
Amber can be enjoyed simply- on ice- or as a mixer. Some cocktails worth giving a try:
Amber Twist
1 Part Amber Liqueur
1 Part The Macallan 12 Year Old
Serve on ice with an orange peel.
Sweet Vanilla Amber
1 Part Amber Liqueur
1 Part Vanilla Vodka
Topped off with ginger ale
Serve in a tall glass on ice.
Amber Cream
1 Part Amber Liqueur
1 Part Heavy Cream
Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with grated chocolate.
Amber Espresso-tini
1 Part Amber Liqueur
1 Part Espresso Vodka (or coffee liqueur)
Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with coffee beans.
Don?t see a drink to suit your tastes? Pick up a bottle and invent one yourself as local bartenders did at the Four Seasons launch party. Recipes ranged from citrus concoctions with Cointreau and fresh limes to nutty martinis using Frangelico and cream (served in a glass rimmed with candied pecans). As with any liqueur, Amber is a sneaky and delicious addition to a coffee or hot chocolate ? topped with whipped cream, of course!
For diehard scotch and whisky fans, Amber might stray too far into the liqueur category, but for those with a sweet tooth it could hit the target on the mark. ?Tis the season for all things sugary and warm, so as the leaves continue to fall and the weather gets nippier, snatch up a bottle of Amber and add that necessary spark to your Boston November evenings!
