Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey Dive Deeper into Their 'Queer' Sex Scenes

"Queer" stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey offered their thoughts on the deeper meaning of their sizzling sex scenes – and their idea of what's truly hot about their cinematic clenches may surprise you.
Entertainment Weekly reported on the stars' new musings, noting that the film so discomfited Turkish censors that they banned a screening in that country for fear that the film's "provocative content" could "endanger public peace."
But perhaps the truly "provocative" thing about the movie is the way the two characters – Lee, played by Craig, and Allerton, played by Starkey – forge a heartfelt connection.
"I feel like the physical act is the least interesting thing," Craig told EW speaking to that thought. "We're all grownups," the former "James Bond" actor added. "This is what people do.
"But the only thing that's interesting, and what I think hopefully works about the scenes, is the emotional journey of each character," Craig went on to add. "That's what we wanted to get across. I think that's why they work."
"I think people love asking about that stuff, but it's certainly not provocative for the sake of being provocative in any way," Starkey seconded in his own comments about the film, which is based on a William S. Burroughs novel that was written in the early 950s but, due to its gay content, never saw print until 1985.
"Luca wanted everything to be imbued with meaning and leading with love," Starkey added, referencing director Luca Guadagnino ("Call Me By Your Name"). "And it's truthful. It's just two people who are in this type of strange, loving relationship and they're working through that. It's just a representation of reality. It's two people; this is the way it works."
The "Outer Banks" star had said before that he and Craig set out to have "fun" with the film's erotic scenes. Discussing the film's erotic content further, Starkey recalled that while an intimacy coordinator was working with the actors, preparations for the sex scenes came down to "mostly conversations between me and Daniel and Luca. We'd all have a conversation about how we'd want it to feel – then just dive in."
But Starkey revealed in his comments to EW that he and his co-star also "had extensive conversations about" the emotional bond between Lee and Allerton, "and how we wanted it to feel.... So by the time we got to shooting it, it felt like we'd already planned it out to a point. There's only so much you can plan. Then you just shoot it, and you see what happens."
Guadagnino – who had made a point of promising that the film would be full of "scandalous" sex scenes – spoke along similar lines, saying that he and Craig had agreed "to go in a very profound space with this movie, emotional space.
"So whether it's injecting heroin, drinking, and being a raconteur, or finally having the body clash with the body of the other, it was all about committing deeply to what this character had to go through and be," Guadagnino added.
Not that clashing bodies aren't also profoundly meaningful – and prevalent in a new trailer for the A24 release that dropped on Nov. 25. Check it out below.
