Ewan McGregor Met with Liza Minnelli Prior to Filming 'Halston'

Before he took the titular role in the recently streamed Netflix series "Halston," Ewan McGregor met with the iconic designer's muse and longtime best friend Liza Minnelli. The Daily Mail reported that the 50-year old Scottish actor told Seth Myers on his late night show on Monday about meeting with people who knew the famous fashion designer first-hand in preparation for the role, including Minnelli.

'Yes, I was really lucky. I mean, there are some people in his world, who kindly sat down with me, people he worked with. But you know, the most amazing friendship he had was with Liza Minnelli, and they had a really beautiful best friendship. And I wanted to meet her, I wanted to meet her anyway, and reassure her that he was in good hands; he was in safe hands, with me,' McGregor told Myers.

He met with Minnelli shortly prior to shooting the series, which was developed and produced by Ryan Murphy as part of a $600 million deal the producer/writer/director made with Netflix in 2018. The roster of shows he has produced thus far for the streaming giant include "The Politician," "Hollywood," "The Boys in the Band," "The Prom," "Ratched" and "Halston."

McGregor assured Minnelli that their conversation would be kept private. "But I got, what she gave to me, was the great love she had for him, and I could see through her, you know, the great love he had for her," McGregor told Myers. In the series McGregor was joined by Krysta Rodriguez, who played Minnelli, replicating the couple's hard-partying days during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

"Halston was frequently photographed at New York City hotspot Studio 54 with his close friends Liza, Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol," wrote the Daily Mail. "Minnelli's use of recreational drugs in the 1970s was noted by the late Warhol, who in a 1978 diary entry recalled the actress and singer arriving at Halston's house and imploring the host to 'Give me every drug you've got.'"

But not all those who knew Halston have been wild about the mini-series, specifically his family members and those who run The Halston Archives, which is run by the late designer's niece Lesley Frowick. She derided the series as 'fictional' and said it was "inaccurate" in a scathing rebuke, the Daily Mail added.

"The Halston Archives remains the only definitive and comprehensive source on the man and his legacy as the personally appointed custodian of his private papers and effects," the statement continued.

Despite the Halston Archives' issues with the upcoming miniseries, it failed to specify any of the alleged inaccuracies or falsehoods in the series.
