Head Over Heels - Original Broadway Cast Album
Steven Bergman READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The iconic female rock group The Go-Go's have become the latest artists to throw their hat into the Broadway ring of "jukebox musicals," and thanks to great casting, "Head Over Heels" has the potential to be a mainstay on the Great White Way, with the original cast recording now available digitally on Sony Masterworks, and physical copies available on November 9th.
The most successful all-female band of all time, The Go-Go's had a string of hits throughout the 1980s, and all of them make their way into this entertaining musical with a book by Tony-winner Jeff Whitty ("Avenue Q"), loosely based on a 16th century poem, "The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia," by Sir Philip Sidney.
The cast recording gives an enticing taste of what's in store for the theater-going fan, from the mega-dance hits "We Got The Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed," to "Vacation" and the title song, all delivered with enthusiasm by a cast that includes the powerhouse voices of Bonnie Milligan (in her Broadway debut, seen off-Broadway in "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater"), Taylor Iman Jones (the national tour of "American Idiot"), Rachel York (most recently seen in "Disaster!"), Andrew Durand (Roundabout's recent "The Robber Bridegroom"), and Alexandra Socha ("Spring Awakening," Amazon's "Red Oaks"). New orchestrations by Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal") also keep the grooves of the originals without watering down these classics for a conservative audience.
In addition to the more well-known songs and performers from the group, this recording features a breakthrough performance from Peppermint ("RuPaul's Drag Race"). Not only is she the first transgender woman to star on Broadway, but her versions of "Vision of Nowness" and the solo hit from Go-Go's frontwoman Belinda Carlisle, "Heaven is a Place on Earth," bring a refreshing sound to these two tunes. The musical focuses on acceptance and gender-blindness, and Peppermint's performance as Pythio, the oracle who delivers the prophesies that motivate this story, blend right in with the town of Arcadia and it's "beat." It's a joy to hear her vocal timbre on these songs.
Bonus tracks include an exclusive new recording of "This Town" by The Go-Go's themselves, marking their first studio recording in over 17 years, so if you're a fan of their catalog, "Head Over Heels" is a must for your musical collection.
