The Athena Cats New Works Fest Presents Staged Readings By Women Playwrights

The Athena Cats, a collective of Southern California female playwrights and directors, presents staged readings of new 10-minutes plays written and directed by women playwrights as part of SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now Day).

The event will kick off on Saturday, April 8, presented by The Athena Cats with support from LA FPI (Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative).

Saturday, April 8 at 1 p.m.:

  • "Visitation" by Mildred Inez Lewis
    Two foster sisters, Shavonne and Gina, struggle against obstacles to visit Shavonne's incarcerated boyfriend.

  • "Break Time" by Desiree York
    Three nurses hope to escape life and death under an invisible tree with just a pack of cigarettes.

  • "A Grave Situation" by Sandra de Helen
    A young mother visits the grave of her recently deceased husband with suicide on her mind.

  • "The Salmon Mousse" by Elisa Manzini
    Following their suicide-murder, a couple must deal with the woman in charge of the Pearly Gates.

  • "A Place Like This" by Meagan Daine
    Two college students take refuge in a Secret Garden following a tragic event on their campus.

  • "Sugar and Spice" by Allie Costa
    Adult siblings seek out the secret recipe for family in this heartwarming story.

    Saturday April 8 at 3 p.m.:

  • "Eleventy-Hundred" by Liz Kerin
    An estranged husband and wife reunite at their son's funeral In the wake of a tragic school shooting.

  • "Muse Me" by Katherine James
    Where does artistic inspiration come from? Twin sisters -- one born living and one born dead -- have spent 60 years intertwined in creating art.

  • "The Pendlewood Witching" by Jennifer Kenyon
    Poppy Pendle wants to expand the family moonshine business, but younger sister Sass is wary of the danger of bootlegging during prohibition.

  • "Doctor's Appointment" by Lauren Gorski
    First-time parents are eager to learn the sex of their baby, but discover instead that their lives are about to get more complicated.

  • "Chasing Sangha" by Marlan Warren
    Recently divorced Barb offers to chaperone Sheila, whom she meets at a Buddhist ashram, on her quest into the wilderness.

    Events will be held at City Garage Theatre, Bergamot Station Arts Center, 2525 Michigan Ave., Building T1, Santa Monica, CA 90404 (off Cloverfield Blvd., between Olympic Blvd. and 10 Freeway). All shows are free; suggested donation.
