Weight Loss and Fitness Goals Reached by Healthy Eating and Exercise

EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.

It's the New Year and most people have resolutions for getting in shape.Dr. Holly Lucille, naturopathic physician and cross-fitness expert, says "Healthy eating and exercise are the best things you can do to lose weight and get in shape." If weight loss and fitness goals are at the top of the list, here are some tips for your daily routine:

Enjoy healthier food

  • Unprocessed foods are best.
  • Eat your fruits and veggies. They're high in fiber and rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Avoid sugar!
  • Eat when you're hungry. Stop when you're full.

    Make a habit of exercising

  • Just start. Overcoming resistance is easier if you put your tennis shoes on and head out the door.
  • Find an activity that you like to do and do it -- a lot!
  • It's easier if it's part of your daily routine.
  • Build muscle. Building muscle helps to burn fat.
  • Try strength workouts. Incorporating some kind of strength training will help you lose fat.
  • Start out slow. Gradually increase the intensity of your workout.

    Relax, don't stress

  • Yoga promotes relaxation. It benefits not just our bodies, but our minds and breathing too!
  • Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace.
  • Turn off the news. Get off Facebook. Get together with a friend. Take a walk!

    Get enough sleep

  • You're more likely to overeat if you're tired.
  • Well-rested people burn more calories than the sleep-deprived. Actually, 20 percent more!
  • Rest is as important as exercise -- it's when the body repairs and heals itself. Take naps if you're doing a lot of exercise.

    Drink more water

  • Drinking more water increases your metabolism AND your energy levels.
  • Sometimes we think we're hungry when we're really thirsty. Try drinking water instead of snacking.
  • Replace sweetened drinks with water. Avoid the extra calories...

    Supplement your success

  • Add protein shakes to smooth out your metabolism and turn off sugar cravings.
  • Support your thyroid and adrenals.
  • Reduce inflammation with curcumin.
