Modern Family - The Complete Season Seven

New to DVD is the 3-disc "Modern Family: The Complete Seventh Season" released by 20th Century Fox Home Video.

Currently in its 8th season, "Modern Family" remains one of the most beloved dysfunctional family comedies of our time. This 3 DVD set includes all 22 Episodes from Season 7, as well as many of the standard extras put forth from the show.

Standout episodes include, but are certainly not limited to: "Phil's Sexy Sexy House," a sort-of-a Blake Edwards-style romp (directed by SNL alum Beth McCarthy-Miller) where all the families take advantage of a luxury home Phil has on the market; "The Storm," a wonderful adventure with the whole Pritchett-Dunphy clan finding themselves trapped together during one of Southern California's rare, but harsh, rain storms; "The Party," which finds Manny and Luke babysitting Lily, and throwing a rowdy party, while Phil and Mitch fight the effects of cannabis candy; and "The Promposal," where Cam and the others help the kids get popular-kid dates for the prom.

Discs 2 and 3 include essential extras. This year's "behind the scenes" extra is hosted by Executive Producer Danny Zucker, taking us from the writing room through production in "The Making of An Episode." He focuses on the previously mentioned "The Storm." It's a nice breath of alleviation from the past offerings with actors from the show. Two standout extras undoubtedly are; "Growing Up Modern Family" with Ariel Winter (Alex Dunphy), Nolan Gould (Luke Dunphy), and Rico Rodriguez (Manny Delgado), delving into their real selves' relationship to their characters as well as how their actor parents have become parental representations while growing up on the show. As I said in my review of Season 6 the highlight of this series has been to see these kids grow up. The other being "Kids In The Spotlight" a sweet extra focusing on Ty Burrell and the kids' contributing involvement with "Kids In The Spotlight" charity that inspires foster home kids, underserved in society, pursue careers in the entertainment industry. And let's not forget about their traditional "Gag Reel" which contains some fun outtakes and physical stunts from the show. It plays a little lighter than usual but is still worth the 7-minute watch.

Although there were some through-storylines diligently brought over from season 6, some of those storylines fell a bit flat in this season. (Halle's on again-off again relationship with Andy, Gloria's attempt as a business owner, et. al). However, all-in-all, Season 7 seems to coast on "Modern Family"'s momentum of past seasons. If you're a fan of the show, or looking to binge on a comedy that doesn't disappoint, then you'll certainly want to add this complete season to your TV shows or DVD library.
