In Second Attack in 5 Years, NYC Man Said He Was Stabbed Over Gay Bias

A man from New York City's Bronx borough was stabbed in an alleged anti-gay attack, the New York Daily News reports. It's reportedly the second time the man was stabbed over his sexuality in less than five years.

"This has happened to me twice and the only thing I'm guilty of is being gay a week after Pride," Marquis Devereaux, a 39-year-old event planner, told the New York Daily News. "What is it that I'm doing wrong?"

Devereaux told the newspaper he was sitting alone in his gated community around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday when two men approached him. He said the men were no more than 25 years old and told him, "We're not going to do any of that boyfriend stuff around here."

Devereaux said he did not provoke the men but one of them slashed him as the other called him a "homo," a "faggot" and "bumbaclot," a Jamaican slang word for a rag that's used as toilet paper.

After calling police, Devereaux was taken to a nearby hospital and received eight stitches. The two men fled the scene.

"I'm not sure if the person thought I was following him or what," he told the New York Daily News. "I don't understand why the whole interaction happened."

Back in January 2011, Dario Reid, 46, was sent to prison for three years for stabbing Devereaux in his leg while mocking him for being gay.

The New York Daily News notes this is the second and unrelated anti-gay attack in New York City this year. On July 7, Lesley Eugene, 24, from Miami, Fla., overheard a man talking to his friends at a McDonald's near Broadway and allegedly said, "I don't want to hear any more of that faggot shit!"

Eugene then allegedly grabbed the victim's cell phone and broke it before punching him in the face. A 16-year-old boy who was with Eugene then allegedly kicked one of the victim's friends in the head, according to the newspaper.

Court records show Eugene was charged with assault and harassment as a hate crime and criminal mischief. He is currently in jail on a $2,500 bail. The teen suspect was also charged but no further details were released, according to the New York Daily News.
