SCOTUS Upholds Marriage Bans: National Marriage Equality Will Have to Wait

In a move viewed as a setback to the growing momentum of the marriage equality movement, the Supreme Court of the United States decided Friday that state bans on same-sex marriage are constitutional. The announcement will leave same-sex couples in 13 states without marriage rights.

The decision was based on a review of cases from four states - Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. Oral arguments on these cases were held on April 28.

Seventy-two percent of Americans live in states that grant equal marriage rights to same-sex couples.
