A Walk Among The Tombstones

Universally revered and respected thespian Liam Neeson it would seem has inherited the reins of starring in the contemporary "revenge thriller." As if the "Taken" film franchise didn't synch his stock-piling of licensed-to-kill anti-heroes, his latest effort , "A Walk Among the Tombstones," confirms Neeson is a force o be reckoned with and feared from the shadows. Once again, Neeson is cast in the role of a "Mr. Fixit" --ex-cop turned private investigator Matt Scudder (the fictional character from the popular book series) is recruited for the cases that require a special touch...and a more clandestine attention to detail.

A mysterious string of violent murders leaves a trail of dismembered bodies --the kidnapped gun molls of drug dealers -- all over the city. One particular body draws the attention of Matthew Scudder, a retired cop and investigator, and it becomes complicated when it appears that the DEA may be involved. Set against the backdrop of New York City's seedy underworld before the turn of the millennium --fear of Y2K and crime was at a high --Scudder must skirt some peculiar alliances, especially when the daughter of a drug czar is held for ransom.

"A Walk Among the Tombstones" lacks the shock-and-awe and fast-adrenaline of a Michael Mann crime spectacle, but its writer/director Scott Frank's focus on recreating a classic paying homage to film-noir inspired, PI caper films with a tempered pace that builds to a dangerous climax. Neeson plays the mysterious, rugged-type very well and is also (always) a pleasure on screen. He lends a material realism to the role that gives Scudder plenty of dimensionality beyond the page of the novel. Scudder is an unconventional hero; as vulnerable as the next guy.

Blu-ray exclusive features delve into the world of "Matt Scudder: Private Eye" from mystery novel to film, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Tombstones" with interviews from the filmmakers and its cast. "A Walk Among the Tombstones" is a nail-biter with an intricately involved plot and a cast that deliver on the intensity of a great crime drama.
