Girls Portray Female Heroes in 'Because We Can' Project

Who would you want little girls to look up to in the world? Women who work hard and achieve great things, presumably?

Cue photographer Eunique Jones, who created the year-long project "Because of Them, We Can." Jones dressed these young girls as influential, accomplished, and powerful figures of women's history alongside famous quotes. She felt it was important to debunk stereotypes and build children's self-esteem by connecting them to "heroes past and present who have and continue to pave the way."

Jones told BuzzFeed, "We choose the figures based on women we felt were bold and vocal in advocating for change and breaking both barriers and the glass ceiling. There were other women who could have been featured as well, however we featured many of them throughout our 365 quest last year."

Jones said that the project was inspired by her two sons, the potential they had, and how much they could accomplish thanks to the work of their ancestors and other trailblazers.

Reflecting on both projects, Jones explained, "The first series showed us how necessary these positive images were and allowed me to think bigger as far as my approach and planning is concerned. Rather than allotting one month to this, I'm committed to spending as much time as possible to connect the dots between the past, present and future."
