Comedy for Campo :: Entertainers Perform for Gay Politico

On July 17, nice Jewish girl Lisa Geduldig will host Stand Up For Campos at El Rio, a night of raucous comedy and music in support of openly gay District 8 Supervisor David Campos. Campos is currently running for State Assembly.

Geduldig took a momentary break from her zany zingers and one liners to explain why Mr. Campos has her support.

"Campos has a proven record on the city level as a member of the Board of Supervisors. While his progressive politics are needed in San Francisco, I support his going to Sacramento to fill Tom Ammiano's seat and progressive voice," she said. "Now if we can only get Ammiano back here as Mayor."

The evening will feature the usual diverse collection of comics that Kosher Comedy is known for, including Yayne Abeba and Frankie Quiones. It wouldn't be a Kosher Comedy event if there wasn't a little political incorrectness. The bill includes Steve Lee, who may be the only disabled Chinese comedian working in America. His comedy is centered primarily around disability issues and racism. Lee, according to the event press release, "blends storytelling and punchlines to convey his belief that we're all equal: equally ignorant, fallible, weird and wanting to be free."

The line-up also includes singer/songwriter Candace Roberts, whose recent video of her song "Not My City Anymore" attracted a good deal of attention. The heartfelt number addresses San Francisco's escalating eviction and cost-of-housing crisis with humor that makes viewers laugh while they think about the important issues that Roberts brings to the table.

Of course Geduldig herself will be performing, in addition to her hosting duties. We wondered how political the evening might be.

"I haven't asked the performers to be necessarily political, but there will be some smatterings I'm sure," she said.

And will the candidate/guest of honor be flexing his own comic muscles?

"I send Campos an email inviting him to tell some jokes or play some music," Geduldig said. "I don't know if he's a closet trumpet or harmonica player. We'll soon find out."

Campos' campaign spokesperson Kyle Smeallie did say,"I can tell you that Campos is planning to speak at the event. I'm not sure if it will fall into the category of 'stand-up', but I'm sure he'll have a quip or two up his sleeve."

Geduldig advises everyone to bring their dancing shoes. The evening will conclude with music by Dr. Loco y Sus Cuates.
