Morrissey: War Wouldn't Exist if More Men Were Gay

Controversial British singer Morrissey made national headlines this week after telling the online magazine Rookie that there wouldn't be war if more men were gay.

When Rookie asked the former Smiths leader what political causes are most important to him, Morrissey, 53, responded by saying, "War, I thought, was the most negative aspect of male heterosexuality. If more men were homosexual, there would be no wars, because homosexual men would never kill other men, whereas heterosexual men love killing other men. They even get medals for it," he continued. "Women don't go to war to kill other women. Wars and armies and nuclear weapons are essentially heterosexual hobbies."

The musician added, "The most political gesture you can make is to refuse to eat animals. It was so when I was a teenager, and is still the case now."

Morrissey's sexuality has been a topic of discussion over the years. The singer has made a number of conflicting statements in interviews when asked about his sexual orientation and has often advocated that he is a member of the "fourth sex." In 1983 he said he was "bored with men and...bored with women" and throughout the late 80s and mid 90s, he admitted to being asexual and celibate. In 1997, however, the indie legend revealed that he had been in a two-year relationship, though, would not tell the gender of his partner.

In a 2006 article by NME, Morrissey says he was no longer celibate and the UK newspaper, the Independent, suggested that he's experiencing a "late-blooming sex life."

In the Rookie interview, the musician, who is an outspoken animal rights activist and vegetarian, slammed pop stars, like Beyonc�, Justin Bieber and Madonna, whom he called McDonna. When the magazine asked Morrissey to recommend music to his teenage fans, he said, " No one making music wants to waste time struggling with art. A group like the Sex Pistols would never again be allowed to slip through, and there is no such thing in 2013 as a popular artist who sets their own terms for success. Whether it be Beyonc� or Justin Bieber, we see singers who have absolutely nothing to offer anyone as they walk offstage clutching three Grammys in each hand."

Morrissey has also made headlines this week for canceling his performance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" because the show's other guests were the cast of the duck hunting realty show, "Ducky Dynasty." The cancellation led to Kimmel to poke fun at the singer by showing a fake clip of "Ducky Dynasty" where the show's cast hunts for vegetables. The late night talk show host also jokingly said that he kept "Ducky Dynasty" on the show because "They have guns and Morrissey doesn't" and that the singer "Keeps finding ways to depress us," Pitchfork notes.

Morrissey didn't take kindly to Kimmel's mockery, however, and slammed Kimmel in a statement.

"I was disappointed with last night's 'Jimmy Kimmel Show' wherein our smiling host managed to ridicule depression (70% of Americans suffer from depression according to the National Institute of Mental Health)," the musician said. "He then found time to ridicule healthy eating (the obesity epidemic in the U.S. costs $147 billion per year in medical expenditure), and he also ridiculed the notion that animals should be entitled to the possession of their own lives. Furthermore, he found time to jokingly promote gun-ownership - hugely amusing for the parents at Sandy Hook, no doubt.

"He also promoted his special guests Duck Dynasty - who kill beings for fun. None of the above issues are, of course, as important as Jimmy Kimmel himself, who has finally revealed his show to have an overwhelming loss of meaning. Tune in and relive the intellectual fog of the 1950s."
