According those in the know, the compelling story of the birth of Poppers goes something like this:

"In 1992, Ryan Landry and The Gold Dust Orphans began work on their first musical Mary Poppers. Well, as fate would have it, (and due to some very bad drugs) Mary never really got off the ground, until NOW! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls get ready for a rollicking ride through the twisted imaginations of Boston's foremost comedic troupe, The Gold Dust Orphans as we bring you the one musical parody we have been waiting a lifetime to present!
