Modern Family - The Complete Second Season

Christopher Levitan READ TIME: 2 MIN.

"Modern Family" is easily one of the best (if not the best) sitcoms on the air. Well-written and acted by a terrific ensemble cast, it's one of the freshest shows on television. The first season of the series was excellent and the second season nearly matches it. While not every episode is perfect, the series as a whole is consistently funny and even touching. It's the rare sitcom that perfectly mixes heart and laughs. "Modern Family" is sentimental without being sappy and funny, often without being vulgar and crude. The shows ends with a direct message conveyed to the audience, a device that is potentially cringe-inducing, but more often than not, works like a charm.

The game cast (including the invaluable Ed O'Neill from "Married With Children") works out a myriad of family and domestic issues including such seemingly banal topics as parenthood and responsibility in a way that is always amusing and original. The extras are solid, if unspectacular. There are interviews, short featurettes, a music video, and a cast read-through. The series is shot in high-definition and the healthy budgets make the series stand out from some of the cheaper sitcoms of old. "Modern Family" is a natural fit for the Bu-ray format; it makes a very good impression in all categories.

"Modern Family: The Complete Second Season" continues a great run for one of the best sitcoms on television. Viewers will laugh and even be moved by the antics of these unique and good-hearted characters. In a cynical age of raunchy comedies involving little more than bodily functions and some unsavory attitudes towards women, "Modern Family" stands out and far ahead of the pack.
