NEW YORK (NY) - As Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week fast approaches in New York City, Joshua Katcher of The Discerning Brute takes to the stage at revered yoga abode, Jivamukti, for a special talk and Q&A, "FASHION & ANIMALS: decoding & harnessing the dialect of fashion culture to help animals" on Sunday, February 6th, from 6-8PM at Jivamukti Yoga at 841 Broadway on the 2nd Floor in New York, NY.

Katcher's talk will be followed by a Q&A with renowned fashion designer John Bartlett. Bartlett exercises compassion in the production of his clothes, and is a committed participant in the PINNACLE initiative, a campaign to reinvent the "NO FUR" pin, and educate the style-savvy about the cruel realities of fur in fashion.

The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

Katcher will speak on the symbols and iconography of various forms of power communicated through dress and utilized in the fashion industry, exploring how those symbols and icons create a dynamic that not only rationalizes and excuses violence toward animals, but encourages their consumption and the display of their skins as the primary method of showcasing one's individual sexuality, power and worth.

Says Katcher, "By understanding why we respond to these visual cues the way we do, where our tactical shortcomings lie, why fashion iconography is so powerful in mainstream culture, we, too, can use this dialect to help animals."

The talk and Q&A will provide an evening of compelling discourse for fans of fashion, initiated activists, and curious newcomers alike.

Joshua Katcher(Creator/author of The Discerning Brute blog; producer for MTV) founded The Discerning Brute in 2008 as a resource for intelligent men who want to make ethical, informed decisions concerning their lifestyles.
