Digital technology has made a variety of sex toys for couples to use whether in proximity or apart. And while modern pleasure has been facilitated in creative and practical ways, the technology isn't without risk.

A hacker was able to take control over the Internet-connected chastity cages in an attempt to extort several victims, Vice reports.

In October, security researchers found that an exposed API allowed hackers to control Internet-connected chastity cages manufactured by the Internet of Things. For the uninitiated, chastity cages are sex toys that users wrap around the penis to prevent erections and ejaculation and have become widely used in BDSM circles.

The hacker told one victim in a message, "your cock is mine now" and demanded a ransom payment via Bitcoin to unlock the chastity cage.

Another victim, identified only as Robert, said the hacker demanded a 0.02 Bitcoin payment — which amounts to approximately $750 — to unlock the device. Fortunately, he was not wearing the chastity cage when it happened, though he realized it was definitely "locked" and he "could not gain access to it."

RJ, another victim, said his experience was the same but that "I wasn't the owner of the cage anymore, so I didn't have full control over the cage at any given moment."

None of this bodes well for Internet of Things. Qiui, the China-based manufacturer of the chastity cage (called Cellmate), did not respond to Vice's request for comment.

As Vice notes, Alex Lomas, a security researcher at Pentest Partners, who audited the Cellmate device and confirmed that extortion messages had been sent to some users, warns that all products will encounter vulnerabilities and, thus, there is a need for better security practices.
