Adult performer Nacho Vidal (aka Jordá González) was detained last week in Spain's Valencia region in connection with the death of fashion photographer Jose Luis Abad in July 2019 at Vidal's home, reports the UK Metro website.

"Abad died at the home of the former adult movie star after ingesting the hallucinogenic substance used in certain environments both for recreational use and for its alleged therapeutic effects to combat addictions. Nacho Vidal, 46, and the other two detainees - a cousin and an assistant to the actor - are being investigated for possible reckless manslaughter," reads a report published on the Le Paiz website.

"The police operation began following the victim's death during the celebration of a mystic ritual based on the inhalation of venom of the Bufo Alvarius toad," a police statement said.

"Spanish police said the photographer died after inhaling the poison of an endangered North American toad," reports BBC News.

Abad used a pipe to inhale the substance, which is secreted from the glands of the Bufo Alvarius, continues the BBC report.

Vidal declined comment to Le Paiz, but his lawyer Daniel Salvador called the death "unfortunate" and "was accidental."

"He has also rejected that Vidal was a promoter or that he was a 'shaman' in the supposed ritual with the Bufo Alvarius toad," the Le Paiz report continues. "'We fully believe in his innocence, but, as is normal, some facts are being investigated. Now, neither has his passport been withdrawn nor does he have to appear before the court.' "

The Metro describes Vidal as "a media-savvy porn star in his mid-40s whose Twitter feed is full of ads for his 25-centimeter aromatic candles of the male genitalia, available in black, white or cerise."

"The Bufo Alvarius toad, or Colorado River toad, one of the 400 species of Mexican frogs, stores in secretory glands behind the head that, dehydrated and then smoked, contains an explosive cocktail of psychoactive alkaloids, especially the 5 -MeO-DMT," writes Le Paiz. "A molecule, present in low doses in the human brain itself, that when circulating through the serotonin receptors causes brief but very acute states of alteration or abduction of consciousness."

"A study from 2019 suggested the substance may have therapeutic properties, such as easing anxiety and depression, but acknowledged there was a limited understanding of its effects in humans," adds the BBC.

"But the 'apparently harmless ancestral ritual' posed a 'serious health risk', attracting people who were 'easily influenced, vulnerable or who were seeking help for illnesses or addictions using alternative methods'," a police statement said.

"On the website of the former porn star, his status as a coach stands out: 'Nacho Vidal guides a process of change in the people who experience his accompaniment,' Le Paiz reports. "In a video uploaded about four years ago on YouTube, Vidal explains his 'humble experience' with the Bufo toad, which he met through a friend in Ibiza. Then he had a bad time with his 'addictions and attachments, he lived in a loop.' There he maintains that after the second shot he closed 'his addiction circles' and was reunited with his 'spirit', in addition to 'connecting with what matters, which is the earth and mother nature.'"
