One Million Moms Attacks JC Penney - This Time Over Lesbian Couple in Ad

The conservative anti-gay group One Million Moms, which is affiliated with the American Family Association, is criticizing JC Penney once again for including a lesbian couple in its May catalog, according to reports in the Hollywood Reporter and other media.

The advertisement features Wendi with her mom and her mom's partner and daughters. The text reads "creativity, oil paints" and "freedom of expression."

"You'll often find Wendi, her partner, Maggie, and daughters elbow-deep in paint, clay or mosaics," the ad also says.

One Million Moms attacked the department store company for the ad and are asking supporters to call or visit their local JC Penney and complain to the store manager.

"Local managers are more likely to listen to your concerns and pass them along to the corporate office," the group says in a statement.

In February the organization targeted JC Penney for hiring Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman and asked people to boycott the company.

"DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there," One Million Moms said.

One Million Moms provided phone numbers to JC Penney and wanted its supporters to call and request that the DeGeneres be fired.

The comedian, however, fired back at the group on her talk show.

"Normally, I try not to pay attention to my haters -- but this time I'd like to talk about it, because my haters are my motivators," she said. "This organization doesn't think I should be the spokesperson because I'm gay. They wanted to get me fired, and I'm proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson. Which is great news for me because I also need some new crew socks. I'm really going to clean up with this discount."

Despite their valiant efforts, One Million Moms announced its defeat in early March. The group said it would no longer focus on getting DeGeneres fired and is moving on to other issues.

"But we have heard back from so many of our members," Monica Cole of One Million Moms said. "We have heard back from men and women -- not just moms -- saying they will no longer shop there at JC Penney, as long as Ellen DeGeneres is their spokesperson."

But it seems as though the group can't break away from slamming JC Penney. One Million Moms is once again resorting to old tactics and is urging people to contact JC Penney's corporate department as well as asking supporters to send emails to the company in order to complain about the gay-friendly ad.

"Last time OMM contacted JC Penney store managers, we were brushed off," the organization states on its website. "Some even experienced in person the store manager saying 'Thank you' and walking off while their customer and our concerned members were in mid-sentence. OMM has been told that JCP corporate office told store managers to say 'Thank you' and then walk away. If they want our business, then we will not be ignored!"
