Watch: After 22 Season, 'Arthur' Gets its First Gay Character, Wedding

Most '90s kids probably grew up watching "Arthur" the aardvark on PBS. And while the show taught many life lessons to kids who are now in their late 20s and early 30s, the iconic program never dealt much with sexuality — until now.

The show's Season 22 premiere features the first openly gay character in the "Arthur" world. The episode, called "Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone" finds Arthur's teacher, the titular Mr. Nigel Ratburn, getting married to his partner, TVLine reports.

In the episode, Arthur and his friends learn Mr. Ratburn is engaged and are shocked that their teacher has a life outside of school.

"When they go home, they sharpen pencils, eat kale and dream up homework assignments," Arthur's BFF Buster says. "They don't even sleep! They just go into low-power mode and watch documentaries."

The animal friends then run into Mr. Ratburn and an uptight woman named Patty (voiced by Jane Lynch). The group thinks he's marrying Patty but it turns out it's his sister. After some misunderstandings and classic "Arthur" hijinks, Arthur and his friends plan to sabotage the wedding but they soon discover Mr. Ratburn isn't marrying mean Patty but Patrick, a chocolatier.

The group is relieved and don't make much of the same-sex wedding — except make fun of Mr. Ratburn and Patrick's dance moves.

TVLine notes that an "Arthur" spinoff "Postcards from Buster" had an episode where Buster the rabbit was visiting Vermont. In that episode, a number of children had same-sex parents.
