A Bigger Splash

"A Bigger Splash" is one of the sexiest films of the year, while also being one of the smartest and most suspenseful. It's a film that whips around with gleeful abandon from gorgeous scenery, to Tilda Swinton rocking out on stage, to Ralph Fiennes dancing with an open shirt around a Mediterranean villa, to Dakota Johnson basking in a bikini by the pool.

There's sex and seduction, violence and vices, longing and lust, beauty and disaster -- and yet it never feels imbalanced, aside from some extra baggage near the finale, where the movie overstays its welcome a tad. However, this is still one 2016's more exciting and original offerings, and it has arrived on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.

The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, blends eroticism and psychological drama with ease. The plot follows Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton), a famous rock star, and her filmmaker boyfriend, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts), who are taking a vacation on the remote Italian island of Pantelleria. They are interrupted by the unexpected visit of their old friend Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and his seductive and mysterious daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson).

The twists and turns of this movie are delicious, and its details are even more delectable upon a second viewing. However, much of the photographic beauty of the film's Mediterranean setting is diminished when you take away the absorption of the theatrical experience, but the Blu-ray still offers up some lovely, sharp visuals (as well as fantastic sound).

Sadly, there's a limitation of bonus content on the home release. There are only a handful of promotional featurettes, which is unfortunate considering the wealth a commentary would bring to this release, or even something regarding the magnificent setting. It's still quite the film, and worthy of purchase, but be forewarned you'd be buying for the movie, and the movie alone.
