PayPal Abruptly Cuts Payments to Site's Adult Performers

An adult streaming website said that PayPal no longer supports payments to its performers hurting 'hundreds of thousands" of models, according to a number of reports, including Vice.

Executives at PornHub said they were "devastated" by the decision by PayPal, which was the primary way the website pays "over a hundred thousand performers."

"Following a review, we have discovered that PornHub has made certain business payments through PayPal without seeking our permission," PayPal said in a statement to Vice. "We have taken action to stop these transactions from occurring."

Performers and models who use PayPal will now have to use a different method to get paid.

"We are all devastated by PayPal's decision to stop payouts to over a hundred thousand performers who rely on them for their livelihoods," PornHub wrote on its blog, which also instructs models on how to set up a new payment method and how to transfer funds from PayPal.

"We sincerely apologize if this causes any delays and we will have staff working around the clock to make sure all payouts are processed as fast as possible on the new payment methods," the company added.

A PornHub spokesperson also gave a statement to Vice about the situation.

"Decisions like that of PayPal and other major companies do nothing but harm efforts to end discrimination and stigma towards sex workers," they said. "While we still have several payment methods for our models available, we will continue to add more sex worker-friendly ones and explore cryptocurrency options in the near future."

Vice goes on to explain why PayPal made the move, citing a policy that says "certain sexually oriented materials or services" are forbidden. Writer Samantha Cole says that language is "intentionally vague enough to allow circumstances like this to happen whenever the company wants."
