Luke Evans continues to defy the notion that an out actor could never land lucrative, mainstream projects. The busy Welch actor, who recently all but threw his hat in the ring to play the next James Bond, has just signed to star in Apple's "Echo 3," which is an "action-thriller drama series, from Oscar winner Mark Boal ('The Hurt Locker'), Apple Studios and Keshet Studios," wrote Deadline.

The series is set in South America and "follows Amber Chesborough, a brilliant young scientist, who is the emotional center of a small American family. When she goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband — two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts — struggle to find her in a layered, personal drama, set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war," Deadline added. Evans will play the role of Bambi, Amber's brother.

The news comes after Evans recently finished shooting a lead ensemble role in Hulu's limited series "Nine Perfect Strangers" opposite Melissa McCarthy and Nicole Kidman. In the series he plays a gay divorce lawyer, saying it was "nice" to portray a gay character on screen for the first time.

"It was a lovely character to delve into and to calibrate and deliver this complex person. But, yes, it was nice to play a gay character after all these years of doing roles on stage and screen,"

In his personal life, Evans has been dating a number of men since breaking up with his most recent bf Rafael Olarra in January.
