The organizers of the Pines Party on Fire Island have sent word that the event won't be happening this year — at least, not in its usual manner.

The Pines Party is the latest in a long line of events, including hundreds of Pride celebrations, that have been canceled, postponed, or translated into online celebrations in order to maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pines Party organizers made the announcement via social media postings, an emailed newsletter, and at their official website.

The advisory read, in part:

As we look forward to the summer of 2020, it is clear that we will not be able to hold our traditional weekend of Pines Party events. While our public beaches will remain open (with social distancing requirements TBD), watching the sunrise with 3000 of our closest friends won't be a possibility this year.

The advisory continued:

To keep the Pines Party magic alive, we are working on some creative ideas to replace our beach party. Nothing would please us more than to roll out some variation of a themed event for Pines Party weekend with costumes, performers and our amazing 2020 music lineup. We are also hoping to continue our fundraising efforts on behalf of Stonewall Community Foundation and The Pines Foundation with an expanded online auction and a digital version of our Pines Party Community Journal.

Organizers urged readers to "Stay tuned for additional details toward the end of May."

"In the meantime," the notice went on to conclude, "stay safe so that we can look forward to another sunrise from the dance floor in 2021."
