When the Phelps clan is protesting at a high school because of the school’s GSA, we will be collecting donations for that same school’s GSA

On Friday, March 13th and Friday March 20th, Driving Equality, a local group dedicated to achieving equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, will be hosting "Phelps-A-Thons" to counter Fred Phelps' hateful message of "God Hates Fags."
"We are currently running eight Phelps-A-Thons all over the country," said Chris Mason, founder of "When the Phelps clan is protesting at a high school because of the school's GSA, we will be collecting donations for that same school's GSA. So they will actually be raising money for the exact same thing they are protesting. This is a fun, positive way to turn Phelps' hateful message into something good."
Fred Phelps' group, the Westboro Baptist Church has announced that they will be protesting at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Lexington High School, and Reading Memorial High School on March 13th.
The group will be back in Massachusetts on March 20th to protest East Boston High School, Harvard University, and Canton High School.
The Phelps group got its start protesting at the funerals of gay men, but has recently gained notoriety for demonstrating at the funerals of fallen soldiers. Common signs held by the protesters are "God Hates Fags," "Thank God for Dead Soldiers," and "Fags Die God Laughs." The Westboro Baptist Church has been labeled a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Phelps-A-Thons are being hosted by Driving Equality, a trek across America to raise awareness of the various forms of discrimination faced by LGBT people in each state of the nation. Highlighting the differences in rights, laws, and amendments between the states will shed light on the current social standing of queer individuals today. Driving Equality hopes to create a dialogue about the disparities across the nation, and what can be done to end discrimination for all.
