Vegas Mpowerment Project will present M-Day on Saturday, January 24 at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (953 E. Sahara Ave., Ste. B-31 in Las Vegas). The event, tailored for young gay and bisexual men in their '20s, will include music, dancing, food, a fabulous free raffle and games. M-Day will begin at 7 p.m., end at 11:30 and is free to attend.

The Mpowerment Project was developed with and for young gay and bisexual men, mobilizing them to shape a healthy community, build positive social connections and support safer sex. The Project can reach large numbers in a cost-effective manner because it operates on the community level instead of targeting men individually or solely through small groups.

A series of principles guides this multilevel program, including the importance of self-determination, personal empowerment, the diffusion of new behaviors through social networks, the power of peer-influence, a need to focus on HIV prevention within the context of issues considered important to young men (e.g., social issues), community building, and always using gaypositive and sex-positive approaches. The Mpowerment Project is the first documented HIV prevention intervention for young gay/bisexual men to succeed in reducing sexual risk behavior.

The Vegas Mpowerment Project members meet at The Center three times a week for meetings, game nights, movie nights and discussion groups. Members also do outreach in the community where they distribute safer sex kits and give out information about the program.

The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada is a community based organization which supports and promotes activities directed at furthering the well being, positive image, and human rights of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community and its allies in Southern Nevada.
