You may not have heard of Mz. Munchie... yet, but the young R&B singer (who will be performing Friday, September 3, 2010 at Club Cafe) has quite an impressive resume: her own CD on a major label, writing songs for Destiny's Child, Next and Monica while still a teenager and touring with such artists as Lauren Hill The Fugges, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and P Diddy.

Growing up in a pop music household (her mother is Grammy-Award-winning songwriter Aleese Simmons), she started singing at a young age. Songwriting soon followed. When Kenny Babyface Edmonds heard her singing in a studio, he was so impressed he signed her and her mom to a music publishing deal and helped her to get a contract with Arista Records. " I've worked with a lot of singers and she's one of the best," Babyface said.

Today Mz. Munchie is hard at work finishing her new album with her mother for her own Label A M I Record Group. She recently returned from Germany where she's been touring. EDGE caught up with her to answer some questions about her career, her influences and what she thinks of her gay fans.

Catch the Munchies

EDGE: When did you start singing?

Mz. Munchie: Well I started singing when I was about two- years old in the church kids choir.

EDGE:You’re mom -- Aleese Simmons -- is a Grammy-Award-winning songwriter. Did you grow up surrounded by music?

Mz. Munchie: My Mom has been a tremendous influence on me And my career I mean when I was younger we would sing the scales in the kitchen and harmonize all the time together and she is an amazing writer and she is fast which inspired me growing up to want to write.

EDGE: What singer(s) have influenced you the most?

Mz. Munchie: Well there isn’t any singer that I can say is My fav that’s kinda a hard question. I love different people for there unique styles. Like Kim Burrell for the acrobats you can do with her voice. Love Lalah Hathaway for her texture. Love Tank for his arrangements, and R.Kelly for for his crazy lyrics and melodies

EDGE: You’ve written songs for such artists as Destiny’s Child, Next and Monica. When did you start writing songs?

Mz. Munchie: I started writing when I was 15. My first song was actually a song called "Sweeter Than a Honey Comb" (lol), then I started collaborating with my mom when I was 16 and co wrote a song on Mary Mary album and it started from there.

EDGE: You’ve been mentored by Kenny Babyface Edmonds. How did that relationship come about?

Mz. Munchie: I met Kenny when I was 16. He heard my voice and he asked me can I arrange and do some backgrounds for him.. While working in the studio together he fell in love with my personality so he says (lol) voice and skills and we began to form a friendship! It’s really cool that I get to see his funny and cool side that not to many people get!!

EDGE: What was working with PDiddy like?

Mz. Munchie: Wow! Working with Diddy was a great experience! He can be demanding at times but that’s why his empire is where it is!! I love his swag!!

EDGE: Your Facebook page says you’ve just returned from tours with Lauryn Hill, The Fugees,, Alicia Keys, P Diddy and Rihanna. Wow that’s an impressive line-up... what was those experiences like?

Mz. Munchie: Working with Laurny was really great! I got my first fun tour experience! With Rihanna I had a ball we always had dope outfits and Rhi-Rhi is so cool!! Love her personality! Workin with Alicia was cool cuz she likes real singers so u know everyone is gonna sound great!

EDGE: Do you have a favorite moment from any of those tours?

Mz. Munchie: But my Fav. Tour was with Diddy and Snoop!! That was the shite (lol) It was a party every night and we had so much fun on stage. I got to sing the lead on two Diddys songs. Singing ’Last Night’ every night was the best and Snoop and his whole team is cool as Hell!! Lots of Smoke in da air !!! Lol

EDGE: Do you like performing in gay clubs like Club Cafe?

Mz. Munchie: Do I like performing at gay clubs absolutely! Why the gay community does not lie and they are so free and full of life and love, which is what I’m all about! We could learn a few thing from them if you ask me and it takes a lot to wow them so if you can wow them, you’re in there!!

EDGE: What will you be performing there this Friday?

Mz. Munchie: I will be performing four songs ’Feeling So’, I Loved You More,’ ’Go Head,’ and my single ’We Got Music.’ I believe and hope that I leave u wanting more!!

EDGE: And if you could say one thing to your fans, what would that be?

Mz. Munchie: What would I like to say to my fans and future fans is that I believe when they see me perform and hear my music that they will have no choice but to catch the Munchies. Lol! I’m contagious!!
