Man Sues NYC Gym After Customers Masturbate in Steam Room

A visit to a steam room at New York City gym got too...steamy for one customer.

A man only known as G.B. is suing the Manhattan gym Equinox after three men allegedly masturbated in a steam room while looking at him, according to a report from The New York Post.

G.B., who The Post describes as a "straight, single dad," says the incident happened in November. After entering the steam room, he was relaxing in the corner of the sauna when the men came inside.

"I'm relaxing, I'm sitting in the corner, it's very meditative," the alleged victim told the newspaper. "The steam clears . . . And I look across from me. This gentleman, sitting pretty close, his towel is open, his legs are spread and he's looking right at me, and the guy next to him was rubbing [the man's] inner thigh.

"He's looking right at me, his towel's off and he's masturbating," G.B. added.

He told The Post he then noticed the man staring at him as he masturbated.

"I thought, 'No escape, I'm going to be sexually assaulted,'" he said, just before he left the sauna.

He says he then told the front desk about the incident but that no one took action. G.B. told The Post the incident left him "shaken up."

Equinox "had known for as much as 10 years prior that similar wrongful acts were occurring in its steam showers," G.B. alleged in his lawsuit, filed at Manhattan Supreme Court.

The Post was able to obtain a recording between the alleged victim and the manager, who told the man sexual activity in steam rooms is "a problem" and "it's something that every gym in New York City, not just Equinox, has an issue with."

A spokeswoman for the gym told the newspaper Equinox "throughly investigates" complaints "and did exactly that in this case."

"We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any inappropriate behavior in our clubs," she added.

Nevertheless, G.B.'s lawyer Marc Held told The Post the gym allegedly refused to nix the offenders' memberships.
