'Heroes' Actor Comes Out as Gay, Says 'Prominent Gay Man' Tried to Out Him

Friday Jul 14, 2017

An actor from the NBC series "Heroes" came out as gay this week in a lengthy post on social media, saying he's revealed his sexuality to the public because a "prominent gay man" tried to out him.

Thomas Dekker, 29, shared a screen shot of a note where he confirmed to his 32,600 follower that he's gay.

"My sexual orientation once again came into question this week when a prominent gay man used an awards acceptance speech to 'out' me," he wrote. "While he did not mention me by name, the explicit details of his reference made it easy for the public and media to connect the dots."

The "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" star didn't mention the man by name but People magazine reports he was referring to Bryan Fuller, an executive producer and writer on "Heroes," who received the Outfest Achievement Award on July 6. In his acceptance speech, Fuller, who has worked on shows like "American Gods" and "Hannibal," said he wanted to introduce gay characters on "Heroes," which has since been canceled.

"I had a brief stint on Heroes where the gay character was 'hetwashed' after the actor's management threatened to pull him from the show if he - the character, not the actor - were gay. The character became straight and the actor came out as gay," Fuller said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2007, Dekker reportedly wrote on Myspace that he's "played a gay character three times before in my career, one when I was twelve (which is on youtube), one when I was fifteen, and another when I was seventeen. I, nor my management have ever had any kind of problem with creating a gay character... What transpired on heroes is something far more complicated than anyone being 'afraid' to make Zach homosexual."

In 2011, Dekker told Out magazine he's straight.

"I've only really had relationships with women, but I'm certainly not closed to it," he said. "If there are possibilities of being able to do anything in life, why would you say you would never take any up?"

However, in his latest social media post, the actor revealed he's married.

"While it is an odd situation, I thank him because it presents a prime opportunity for me to publicly say that I am indeed a man who proudly loves other men," Dekker wrote. "In fact, this April, I married my husband and I could not be happier."
