Robyn Crawford, one of the late Whitney Houston's best friends, revealed in her new memoir, "A Song For You: My Life with Whitney Houston" that the two shared a romantic relationship for years.

Their relationship began, according to Crawford, in 1980, long before Houston's superstardom. It was that stardom, in fact, that Crawford says caused Houston to end their physical relationship.

"She said we shouldn't be physical anymore," writes Crawford, according to People, "because it would make our journey even more difficult."

"She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us," says Crawford, "and back in the '80s that's how it felt. I kept it safe. I found comfort in my silence."

In the memoir, Crawford details that Houston ended their physical relationship in 1982 by giving her a blue bible, and telling her that Cissy Houston, her mother, said "it wasn't natural for two women to be that close..."

"[B]ut we were that close," Crawford said.

"We never talked about labels, like lesbian or gay," she writes, according to NBC News. "We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever."

Crawford's memoir comes seven years after Houston's death by drowning and complications from the combination of heart disease and cocaine use. She died in February 2012 at 48.

"I'd come to the point where I felt the need to stand up for our friendship," Crawford said to People. "And I felt an urgency to stand up and share the woman behind the incredible talent."

This isn't the first time people have claimed the iconic singer has had same-sex relationships. A 2017 Showtimes documentary called "Whitney: Can I Be Me" explored her sexuality, including her close relationship with Crawford.

"A Song For You: My Life with Whitney Houston" is expected to release November 12 from Penguin Publishing Group.
