Australian Dad Covers Car in Marriage Equality Stickers to Support Gay Son

Thursday Apr 20, 2017

Prepare for the most heart-warming story of the day.

Believe it or not, marriage equality is still not legal in Australia. To show solidarity and support for his gay son, one father decided to cover his new car in pro same-sex marriage stickers, BuzzFeed reports.

Geoff Thomas, who lives in Abbotsbury, Sydney, is a retired plumber, a Vietnam vet, a father of two and a grandfather of four. He's now an LGBT activist.

After his son Nathan came out as gay over a decade ago, Thomas has been supportive and a vocal advocate of same-sex marriage and LGBT rights. Speaking to BuzzFeed, Thomas said he "grew up homophobic."

"I spent nine years in the army, I'm a Vietnam veteran, I was a plumbing contractor," he said. "I was conditioned to be homophobic, and then one day my son comes out to me."

"I had to ask myself the question -- what is it about gays that I didn't like? After that, I decided it was unfounded fear, ignorance and prejudice," he told BuzzFeed. "Then I came to the view that my son wasn't equal in law and that really got up my nose, so I became a very strong advocate for marriage equality.

"I'd had this talk with some people and I said, 'Every man and his dog supports marriage equality,'" he added. "And I thought, I'll put that on my ute [slang for utility vehicle]!"

Thomas paid for marriage equality/rainbow signs and stuck them over his car, which is only a few months old. He said he plans on taking the car on a trip to Melbourne, Mount Gambia and Riverina later this month in order to talk to people about same-sex marriage.

He told BuzzFeed he doesn't understand why marriage equality has not yet come to Australia.

"To me it's a civil rights issue. It's got nothing to do with religion, nothing to do with gay people having babies," Thomas said. "In the 12 years I've been advocating for this, I'm yet to hear a reasonable argument against it."
