At a recent show at the Pearl Concert Theater, rocker Greg Allmanwas upbeat, looking healthy (all things considered, especially with recent health issues), and appreciative of the audience's enthusiasm. His set list covered all bases, including songs from his solo albums such as "Laid Back" and the Grammy nominated "Low Country Blues" from 2011, to several Allman Brothers' classics.

Whether he's solo or with The Allman Brothers, Greg has never had a shortage of tremendous musicians. Such is the case with his current band. I was especially impressed with keyboardist Bruce Katz and saxophonist Jay Collins, especially during the song "Statesboro Blues." Lifelong friend Floyd Miles accompanies Allman on tour and offers exceptional vocals at different points during the concert.

Gregg Allman delivers a great night of rock and blues at The Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas.

Not surprisingly, the audience's favorite moments were when Gregg played his classic Allman Brothers hits, such as "Statesboro Blues," "Wasted Words," "Sweet Melissa," and "Whipping Post." The band also offered interesting new treatments to "Midnight Rider" and "One Way Out." While I don't feel that a lot of surprises were offered, I do know that it was a solid 90 minutes of music from a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.

I also appreciated the fact that Allman was in favor of supporting local Las Vegas artists, having guitarist Justin Mather perform as the opening act. Justin offered a great set and it was obvious that he was thankful for the opportunity to open for a rock legend.

Gregg Allman has a few solo dates left in January. Then after a short break, he will be back with The Allman Brothers for a series of concerts in New York in March.

Gregg Allman played Jan. 12 at the Pearl Concert Theater, 4321 West Flamingo Road in Las Vegas. For info about upcoming shows, call 702-944-3200 or visit www.palms.com/las-vegas-pearl-theater/ For more info about Greg Allman tour dates, visit www.greggallman.com
