Road to Hong Kong / Say One for Me

The British label, Sepia Records, has released a CD containing the songs and underscoring to two rare soundtracks, "The Road to Hong Kong" and "Say One For Me," as part of a series featuring the golden baritone of Bing Crosby during the peak of his career.

"The Road to Hong Kong" was the last of the famous "Road..." films featuring the classic team of Crosby and Bob Hope as two buddies finding adventures around the globe. The 1962 movie, created twenty-two years after "Road to Singapore" first exposed audiences to the on-stage chemistry of the two popular performers, also co-starred Dorothy Lamour as the longtime female counterpoint to the antics of the two comedians, and a young Joan Collins to add an attractive femme to the franchise.

"Say One For Me" was a 20th Century Fox release in 1958 with Crosby (sans Hope), the young and sophisticated Debbie Reynolds, Ray Walston, and a dashing Robert Wagner. The film was not treated well by critics, but yielded a moderate return upon its release.

Both shows featured songs by the famous songwriting team of Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen ("Love and Marriage," "Come Fly With Me"), along with instrumental arrangements by Robert Farnon (for "The Road to Hong Kong") and Lionel Newman ("Say One For Me").

Crosby's smooth voice is given plenty of material to show off throughout the tracks. From his solos (the title song on "Say One For Me" and the singles, "I Couldn't Care Less" and "The Secret of Christmas") to his "buddy" duets with Hope ("Team Work" and "The Road to Hong Kong"), Crosby shows why he was such a bankable commodity. There was even speculation of an eighth "Road" film in the works when Crosby sadly passed away in 1977.

Both soundtracks have been very scarce finds to date, making this compilation an opportunity to enjoy some hard-to-find tracks from the master crooner, Bing Crosby.
