The divine Jackie Collins will be performing a Cabaret Dinner show the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket on Friday, August 27.

The glamorous Miss Collins has been entertaining audiences for the past three decades in major cities (Boston, New York) and gay meccas (Fort Lauderdale, Provincetown). Although she isn't as much a fan of traveling as she had been in the past, Collins will still perform anywhere as long as it's for a worthy cause.

"I've done thousands and thousands of work for charity events" including AIDS Care Ocean State, Collins said.

For the Stadium Theatre show Collins pays tribute to Diana Ross, who she has idolized for a very long time.

"Back in the day there was no Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga," explained Collins. "It was Diana Ross."

Collins appreciates Ross' energy and electrifying stage presence.

"When I sing, I want you to feel what I'm feeling," Collins said, noting Ross has the ability to truly capture an audience's attention. That is always been her goal.

All of Diana’s classics

Collins has a huge selection of music planned for the show, including the classic "I’m Coming Out," as well as The Supremes’ favorites including "Baby Love," Where Did Our Love Go," "Stop! In the Name of Love."

Collins also will sing songs from Ross’s Oscar-nominated performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues, including "God Bless The Child."

In the early 1980s, Collins had Maurice Starr as a manager, who also worked with popular teen groups New Kids on the Block and New Edition.

"My voice was so high and I sounded so much like a woman," Collins recalled. "They didn’t know what to do with me. They offered me a few backing tracks on New Edition’s album but nobody would have ever known it was me."

Collins even recorded her own single, but later grew disillusioned with the recording industry. On a winter’s evening in 1985, Collins knew she wanted to do drag for a living.

"I had a few beers and I began singing along with a jukebox in the nightclub and the rest is history," Collins said.

Collins has won numerous plaudits from the LGBT community. She is a former Miss Gay Rhode Island, a former Miss Miami, a former Miss West Palm Beach.

Collins has a loyal cadre of fans, who flock to see her shows. However, she notes her shows are intended for adults, not children, due to the adult content.

Collins, who classifies herself as a transsexual, wants to make a few things clear: "I’m not a drag queen so I don’t just do it for entertainment purposes. I do it because I can sing and I’m a singer. This is my livelihood. This is what pays my bills."

Over the years she has accumulated a diverse wardrobe from all the. Her house contains two rooms filled with gowns, shoes, hairpieces, wigs, capes, and other accessories.

A regular fixture on the Providence club scene, Collins performs every Friday night she performs at Union, and the second Saturday of every month Collins can be seen at the Dark Lady.

Jackie Collins performs on Friday August 28, 2010 at The Stadium Theatre, 28 Monument Square, Woonsocket, RI. For tickets, call 401-762-4545 or visit The Stadium Theatre website.
