Top Gun

The latest Blu-ray edition of the iconic "Top Gun" pretty much comes with the same bells and whistles as the last version, except this time it comes with a 3D disc as well. Recently released in select IMAX screens for a pre-Blu-ray launch, the 3D effects were supervised by director Tony Scott. Now, the homoerotic scenes of shirtless volleyball-playing studs look extra life-like in crisp 3D. But for those of you who already have the last "25th Anniversary Edition" there is really no reason to purchase this edition unless you have a 3D television.

As I said in my review of the last Blu-ray version, "Top Gun" is a nicely nostalgic trip back to a time when movies were slick while still allowing characters to come to life and scenes to be memorable and repeatable. "Take me to bed or lose me forever!"

The 2D Blu-ray comes with a jet-load of extras including commentary from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott plus a six-part, two and a half hour long documentary on the making of the film that features newer interviews with key supporting players. The disc also includes multi-angle storyboards that show how they captured the detailed maneuvers of the flying scenes, a look at the "real" Top Gun school in California, music videos from Kenny Loggins, Berlin, Loverboy, and Harold Faltermeyer, TV spots, vintage Tom Cruise interviews, and a Digital Copy.
