In A Heartbeat
From the opening strains of "I'm a Little Fish," with its mandolin flavored sound, you know you're in for a joyful listen through the pleasant melodies and comfortable vocals of Laura Doherty, award-winning singer / songwriter for younger listeners. Her third release for the wee set is titled "In a Heartbeat," and the thirteen arrangements provide a soothing assortment of songs about drums, electric guitars, bicycles and flamingos.
Accompanied by her trio (Cat Tager on backing vocals, Andrew Wilkins on bass, and Michael Riendeau on drums), and featuring guest drummer Glenn Kotche of Wilco, the Chicago transplant has been recognized by Time Out NY, Sirius/XM's Kids Place Live, and Parents Choice for her two previous releases ("Kids in the City," "Shining Like a Star"), and with tunes like the toe-tapping, "Jazzasaurus," she should continue to build her fan base of families looking to locate innocent music with a welcoming sound to entertain their children without fear of content. "In a Heartbeat" also includes two delightful cover versions of "Paper Moon," and the 50's perennial, "See You Later Alligator."
Additionally, Doherty is expanding her number of live performances, with past venues including Lollapalooza and Boston's Club Passim, and upcoming gigs in both Chicago and Philadelphia. She's on the faculty of "Old Town School of Folk Music" in Chitown, where her records can be picked up, in addition to finding them on her website.
In the collection of children's music, where you can expose your kids to songs about the importance of eating properly, and being a good person, Doherty deserves a listen.
